GAF Timberline Solar FAQ
-
Will I save money on my electricity bill?
Installing solar roof shingles on your home can potentially lead to significant savings on your electric bill over time, but the extent of these savings depends on several factors. The amount of electricity produced by solar roof shingles is influenced by factors such as the size of your roof, the angle and orientation of your roof, and the local climate and weather conditions. Many regions offer “net metering programs”, which allow you to sell excess electricity generated by your solar system back to the grid. This can further reduce your electric bill by providing credits for the surplus energy you generate. The cost of electricity from your utility company and the rate at which it increases can significantly impact your savings. Higher electricity rates and rate increases can result in more substantial savings from solar. Installation Costs: The cost of purchasing and installing solar shingles varies based on your location and the specifics of your home. It’s essential to consider both the upfront costs and long-term savings when evaluating the financial impact. Maintenance and Warranty: Solar shingles generally require minimal maintenance, but it’s essential to factor in any maintenance costs and understand the warranty coverage for your system.
-
Am I eligible for tax rebates and incentives?
Government incentives, tax credits, and rebates can lower the upfront cost of installing solar shingles, improving your return on investment and speeding up the time it takes to recoup your initial investment. Your tax advisor and local utility company will be able to provide additional information on the availability of credits and rebates for your specific area.

Will my solar panels produce energy when it's cloudy or raining?
Solar panels can generate electricity even on overcast days. Cloud cover scatters sunlight, reducing the intensity of the sunlight that reaches the panels. However, modern solar panels are designed to capture diffuse sunlight and can still produce some electricity in these conditions. Rain itself doesn’t affect solar panel operation. In fact, rain can help keep your solar panels clean, washing away dust and debris that might accumulate on the surface. Combining your solar panels with an energy storage system (such as batteries) allows you to store excess electricity generated on sunny days and use it during periods of low solar production. Finally, many regions offer net metering or feed-in tariff programs, allowing you to receive credits for surplus electricity generated on sunny days and use those credits during cloudy or rainy periods.

How large will the solar shingle roof system be?
The size of a solar panel installation on a typical residential home can vary significantly based on factors such as energy needs, available roof space, geographic location, and individual preferences. However, a typical residential solar installation in the United States usually ranges from 3 kW to 8 kW, with 5 kW being a common size. Here’s what these sizes mean: 3 kW System: This is on the smaller side and might consist of around 60-80 solar shingles. 5 kW System: This is a mid-sized residential solar installation and is often composed of 90-120 solar shingles. 8 kW System: A larger residential solar installation may consist of 150-320 solar shingles or more. Keep in mind that these are general estimates, and the actual size of a residential solar shingle system can vary based on individual energy consumption and goals. Our solar experts have years of experience estimating installation costs and energy output, and are ready to assist any Eiseman Construction customers interested in solar options.
